Number Puzzle Three Part Circle

Number Puzzle - Problems involving Circles Three Parts

  • In these types of problems, a circle will be divided into three parts.
  • An arithmetic operation applied on the numbers in the two parts gives the number in the third part.
  • Every problem consists of three such figures and the rule that is applied in the first two figures holds good for the third figure also.
  • VARIOUS TYPES OF RELATIONSHIPS

    (i) apm b=c

    (ii) ab = c

    (iii) (a + b) times n = c, where n is a number

    (iv) sqrt{a^{2}+b^{2}}=C

    (v) sqrt{a^{2}-b^{2}}=C

    (vi) sqrt{a+b}=C

    i.  sqrt{a-b}=C

    ii. sqrt{frac{a^{2}+b^{2}}{2}}=c

    iii. sqrt[3]{a}pm sqrt[3]{b}=C

    iv.   frac{ab}{n}=c

    v.  (ab)times n=c

    vi. (apm b)^{3}=c

Example : Which number replaces the question mark (?)

    A.  33       B.  44         C.  22                D.  55

    Answer : 22

Solution : In each circle, the lower number equals the product of the top two numbers, subtracting 3 for the first circle, 4 for the second circle and 5 from the last circle:

  • Circle 1 : Multiply 3 x 7 = 21. Now subtract 3 , we get 21 - 3 = 17.
  • Circle 2 : Multiply 2 X 8 = 16. Now subtract 4, we get 16 - 4 = 12.
  • Circle 3 : Multiply 9 by 3 = 27 . Now subtract 5, we get = 27 -5 = 22
  • Example : Which number replaces the question mark (?)

    A.  1           B. 2           C. 3               D. 4

    Answer : A that is 1

Solution : In each circle, add together the numbers in the left and right hand segments, and subtract 2 to give the result in the lower segment.

  • Circle 1 : Add 7 + 9 = 16, now subtract 2 , we get = 16 - 2 = 14
  • Circle 2 : Add 3 + 2 = 5, now subtract 2 , we get = 5 - 2 = 3
  • Circle 1 : Let the number be x :
  • Add 6 + x, now subtract 2 , we get = 6 + x - 2 = 5;

    On solving this equation, we get : 4 + x = 5, hence x = 1.
